Bon voyage!

The Big Hole
Made in the the 19th century in South Africa, the Big Hole is the second largest artificial hole ever excavated by humans. The story begins in 1871, when one of De Beers brothers' employees found the first diamond on the actual place of the mine. Between 1871 and 1914, when the mine was closed, over 50.000 miners dug to 215 meters deep finding an impressive amount of diamonds: 2720 kilograms. The immense vertical mine, which is 463 meters wide, was filled with underground water, its level being of 40 meters.

Killer lake
Its real name is lake Nyos in Cameroon, but it is known as the killer lake since the tragic event in 1986. On August 21, 1986, an eruption occurred at lake Nyos, provoking the release of about 1.6 million tonnes of CO2, while a white cloud with a length of almost 100 kilometers rose. Immediately after this, people and animals started to lose conscience. Within 25 kilometers of the lake, no one resisted to the attack of the mysterious cloud, and from the numerous people affected, only a few recovered. The cloud disappeared after two days, leaving behind 1.700 human victims and 3.500 livestock.
The Door to Hell
The inhabitants have called it “The Door to Hell” and, at first sight, the gigantic burning crater from Turkmenistan, near Darvaza, has all the necessary elements in order to be compared with a mythological door that leads to a strange underworld. In fact, no one knows where the door leads, yet one thing is for sure, and that for years no one was able to explore the crater. Everything started in 1971, when a group of Russian geologists looking for natural gas accidentally discovered a huge underground cavern. When the earth collapsed all the drilling equipments were swollen, while the concentration of gases within the crater was so high that nobody dared to go down there. Then, someone came with the idea of lighting the gas in the crater on fire in order to avoid a pollution on a larger scale, and the crater has been burning ever since without interruption. The quantity of gas burned throughout all theses years cannot be estimated.
Antelope Canyon
Antelope Canyon is by far the most-visited slot canyon in southwestern U.S., despite the fact that its beauty has often proved to be so dangerous. Made from two sections, the canyon is situated on Navajo land in Arizona. One section, the Upper Antelope Canyon, is also known as Tse' bighanilini meaning “the place where water runs through rocks”, while the Navajo name for the Lower Antelope Canyon is Hasdestwazi, or “spiral rock arches.” The canyon is really dangerous especially when it rains as during monsoon season the water can easily flood the canyon . In 1997, 11 tourists and one of their guides were killed in Lower Antelope Canyon by a flash flood.
Chocolate hills
Perfectly cone-shaped, the chocolate hills in Bohol, Philippines represent an amazing and unusual geological formation in the world. Most recent studies have shown that on an area of about 50 square kilometers in Bohol there are 1.776 hills covered in green grass that during the dry season turns brown. This spectacular hills are also featured on the provincial flag as a symbol of beauty in the province. Their height varies from 30 to 120 meters.
