In the novel Elective Affinities, Goethe was already talking about the
red thread in the sense of conductor thread, expression adopted
afterwards also by Freud to define the unconscious. The red cross on a
white field, which from the beginning of the XI century is the symbol of
the City of Milan, was born from the intention to merge the red of the
nobility with the white of the people. But the titles of contemporary
Milan are linked to creativity and acquired with merit, not with right.
